An Escort Of Angels And Psalm 43

Psalm 43 reads as follows from the New King James version of the Bible:

1 Vindicate me, O God

• And plead my cause against an ungodly nation; 
  Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!
  2 For You are the God of my strength;
  Why do You cast me off? 
  Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 

  3 Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
  Let them lead me; 
  Let them bring me to Your holy hill 
  And to Your tabernacle.
  4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
  To God my exceeding joy; 
  And on the harp I will praise You, 
  O God, my God. 

  5 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
  And why are you disquieted within me? 
  Hope in God; 
  For I shall yet praise Him, 
  The help of my countenance and my God.

The psalmist wishes to get to the holy hill to worship and praise the Lord and specifically play the harp.

However his way is thwarted or blocked in some unknown manner and while the details of what the obstacles were are left to the imagination, they were strong enough to prevent him from getting to the place of worship.

The obstacles could have been of any type or number; it is unknown what they were but the tapestry of what was there was that he was facing obstacles that he knew were obstacles and he couldn't surmount them. We could speculate they involved other people that were preventing his way, but that might not have been the case. It could have been the elements themselves that were against him and his wishes to get to the holy hill and the place of praise and worship in the presence of the Lord.

Does he have to meander through foreboding woodlands or does he have to traverse through a haze of city streets, filled with wanton and threatening strangers?

But the psalm is saying that there were enemies about and that they weren't favorable to the ways of the Lord and there is some likelihood that the struggles he was facing involved them.

There is a sense of despair on the part of the psalmist that the opposing elements of hostility that were around felt like a rejection from the Lord himself. While intellectually he knew that this wasn't the case, but the circumstances around him were so foreboding and even venomous that he couldn't help but feel that way.  As less and less of the people of the Lord appeared on landscapes with hostile forces filling in all over the place, he himself was feeling abandoned to this scene of mounting despair.

This aspect of the psalm shows how outer events can be misread in terms of what they mean in the relationship with the Lord. If the circumstances are dire, a sense of abandonment naturally ensues, but that he retained the ability to go to the Lord and ask for angelic help indicates an intact and close relationship with the Lord.

But the imagination can bring us many possibilities as to what the obstacles might have been.

But the psalmist does point out the oppression that was a real force that was felt from a general malaise of an ungodly nation that had traveled all the way to him personally and was oppressive in its scope and largesse. While this can also point to one individual, it can also be a huge national front as well according to this psalm which represents both national and individual oppressiveness in the initial verses.

There must have been a dustbowl of activities swirling about all over the place, yet the angels came to him singly and individually. There were there for him probably only for him.

But one of the main messages of this psalm is the Lord and maker of the universe knows of the individual obstacles that those who might be seeking him are facing.  In fact in this psalm the call for angelic help was from one individual and was given to one individual.

He says that if he can get through and get there he will commence to what he desired which was play the harp the Lord.

The situation facing the psalmist was one that can be repeated in many ways and in many circumstances. Someone may want to do something good for the Lord and come into his presence with worship and there are real obstacles that are difficult to traverse, or nearly impossible to overcome by natural means. But of course in this day and age many obstacles are of our own making including not setting aside the time and place to seek the Lord in quiet contemplation and prayer.

The path to this place with the Lord is blocked.

It could be that the angels of the Lord are in fact the experts needed to deal with blocks or need to form a block for your safety and protection as in the case of Balaam, where he ways were blocked.by the angel.

The psalmist is also explaining in the psalm the intentions of his wishes and his thinking on the matter. He says if he can get there, he will follow through on his intentions, but as of now he is not enabled to do this and is confounded by obstacles he just can't get past. His does know his own wishes and is quite plain with them in his requests.

By the wording of this psalm, he is asking that the Lord send him the angel of light and the angel of truth to escort him past the obstacles to the holy hill. This may indicate that he was fighting against elements of darkness and falsehood.

Apparently there is nobody from the community of men and women who can or are able to bring him through and to. The natural means of other people and their help is inadequate or lacking in this situation.

A major theme of this psalm is that there is the recourse of angelic help especially with regards to real and operative obstacles and blocked or hindered roadways to the ways and wishes of the Lord. The psalmist is calling upon the Lord for this escort.

This escort was quite specific and quite personal to him, and his vision of playing that harp there for the Lord.

While events were twirling about through the nation, mostly not for good, the angels were appearing to him.

The practice and concept of asking for and receiving angelic help is seen as viable and real to his need to get past and get through to the place of the Lord.

This psalm highlights that there the need will arise for help in the spiritual and practical physical realms that calls for the assistance and intervening presence of powerful angels.

He was trying to get to someplace that was in a specific physical setting and from where he was he was blocked from actually physically getting safely to the holy hill.

There are many ways someone might need to get from point A to point

B or to another place and this will not only be in a physical sense but also a spiritual sense.  You may need to get from point A to point B in your spiritual understandings, in your relationships, in your attitude, in your focus and how you spend your time, in your own dynamic and creative thinking and so on.

The idea of needing assistance from angels can be viable to many and even all affairs that need to be established in new and better way, where as in this case with the psalmist you need to get to that better place of the Lord in this area of your life.

The psalmist knew the holy hill was the place; he only needed to get there.

It is interesting that the transgression of the circumstances against the psalmist went against a specific gift and talent he had which was to play the harp.

It becomes frustrating when we can't use our gifts and talents in good and wished for ways.

Angels can be sent for situations that involve the material and physical as well as the spiritual and the idea of the leadings of truth and light have spiritual connotations as well but they are also strongly applicable to the physical world and all it contains as this is part of the landscape inhabit.

When things are bringing about interference, there is a call to amend this situation with further understanding and help.  An obstacle course needs to be acknowledged as real in the presence of the Lord in prayer.

The second task is to ask the Lord for the assistance of angels in conjunction with your dealings with the obstacles and also the unknown and unforeseen obstacles that may arise suddenly.

Light and truth represent a passage, the way through.

Angels overpower circumstances, situations and roadblocks to the ways of the Lord. Their actions are so timely that they are to the fraction of a second.

You might think situations are minor and you don't need angels, but you never know and it is best to err on the side of all light and all truth.

Always ask for their assistance.

Then in the concluding verses the psalmist praises the Lord as the help of his countenance, another gem in this psalm that the ways and doings of the Lord for him were upholding his health and good appearance..

All this was to him as an individual as he was the one playing the harp and he was the one who the Lord sends the angels to.

This psalm does have a happy ending. Hope remains.  The psalmist did get this escort of angels, he did get to the holy hill and was happy as he concludes saying, "I will yet praise him."
